I drive a 2008 Honda Accord with 88K miles.

After the oil change today my mechanic gave me a long list of items. One of them was "REPLACE REAR STRUCTS". I asked him why, what happened and he said "THEY ARE LEAKING".

The cost of this replacement is $1019.04.

What should I do? I don't even know if they are leaking and most of the mechanics are trying to make extra dollars by lying to their customers.

take a peek under the car. Do you see what looks to be leaks coming from the struts?

Shop around for a reputable local mechanic and gets some quotes on the repair.

The mechanic told me it is a very slow leaking process. Hard to tell for me if something is leaking or not.

You should get another opinion because, speaking as a shop owner who specializes in Japanese makes, that price is totally absurd. All too often things are described as leaking when there is barely normal dampness.

Based on the struts, I would consider the entire list suspect.

In my experience an '08 Accord with only 88k miles is unlikely to need much of anything.

Do the "bounce test" on the car.

You, or someone a bit heavier and stronger, stand by the trunk on one side, and push down on the trunk quickly and forcefully. The suspension should go down, come back up, then go down a bit again, then stop.

Most likely, your struts are fine for now. A slow leaking strut can take years and many thousands of miles before they lose all damping ability.

You desperately need to find another shop. The parts for Monroe best struts for that Accord are 75 bucks each- you have two. So the labor is $850.00? For most shops that's enough money for 7 hours work. It takes less than an hour but you'll pay for an hour. This should be a less than $300 repair.

If you see no obvious fluid and your rear is not bouncing excessively then your mechanic is just trying to rip you off.

yes, but there will be some physical evidence of the leak. It will be slow, and you can probably drive for a long time before the strut is completely junk.

But, there will still be an apparent wet spot somewhere on the body.

If it looks something like that, you've got time. Another thing to check is the bounce test. Put your weight on one corner of the car and release. The car should come back up and instantly stop. If it bounces up and down a few times, the strut is gone and you need to replace it.

I did price out a few struts from rockauto.com

Cheapest Sensen was $28, most expensive KYB was $72 each. A few brands in between like Monroe and Gabriel around $50. I'd imagine you could get it done for much cheaper than $1K.

Thanks everyone! I will do the bounce test and post the results. Also, thanks for letting me know. I knew the mechanic was charging insane amount of money.
