When you're looking to buy a German automobile, cheap prices generally mean there's trouble with the vehicle. It's cheap for a reason!

MOST, (but not all) faults that trigger a check engine light will not lead to total engine failure.

And, we don't know who put the tape over the light, but had the car been inspected by the dealer they should have noticed the light did not illuminate with key on, engine off bulb check.

Plenty of blame to go around.

The I want that now culture put the gun to his head, but given the dirt driveway, the need to call a mechanic and the wife's teeth I'd say he was in over his head before he started down this path of financial misadventure.

This model of 5 series is not bad if you have a decent set mechanical skills. It's no Honda, but is a lot better than an Audi the same vintage.

I'll stick by my earlier post with the STUPID sign . . .

Regardless of the "hype and puffing" by the Salesman, why would anyone with half a brain, other than possibly a fully trained and qualified mechanic, ever consider dropping that kind of money on a used vehicle without having it fully inspected?

It could not have been a BMW dealer "repair" - they would have used Düct tape.

So, the buyer was not observant enough to notice that the CEL did not illuminate during the self-test cycle when the switch was turned ON? ALL of the warning lights should come on during this test cycle! It has been that way on nearly all vehicles for many years!
It just reinforces my contention that such things are useless, because nobody pays attention!

Been a Long time since I was in the Buy/Sell used car business. Those days a private party deal was a "AS IS" sale while a used car lot had a 30 day 50/50 Warranty. Never heard of any Used Car lot or Dlr selling any "AS IS" off their lot. Think that a small claims Court Judge would not look kindly on that type of business transaction.

It really isn't uncommon. That's why this forum exists.

Nearly every car I've ever seen for sale on a car lot has a label with the following:

[ ] Warranty

[X] No Warranty

IMO opinion when the no warranty box is checked one needs to exercise a little more due diligence.

It's unbelievable that some people are blaming buyer rather than dealer who sold a car with check light covered with tape. I can understand if car died next day but there was no prior history or even if there was no effort was made to hide it. But this is far from it. It doesn't matter if the previous owner of this car had put the tape on it - once it goes to dealer they must check everything or atleast BS like this. This kind of dealer should be put out of business.
