For me, it's in the same place as the hand crank, manual choke and gravity-fed fuel system. Which means out in cyber space!

They did. I think 2011 was the last model year.

Since when is a clutch required to move a lever?

There are some manual transmissions where you do not clutch to shift. The driver shifts gears.

Please tell me which cars would do that?

You are confused. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will usually find that one of them is wrong.

My 03 M3 did. Some liberty transmissions are this way. There are many more examples. That isn't really the point. The point is that your personal opinion of the definition is incorrect.

BMW's linear SMG doesn't even have a clutch pedal. Initially it is an odd feeling to get used to.

Automatic is not a shift transmission. If you have an 8 speed automatic transmission you do not have 8 individual gears that you can use a shift lever and move into each gear. In some cars you can choose a gear. In our Honda Accord you can choose three forward gears if I remember correctly. You can also leave it in Drive and the car will shift for you. It is still an automatic transmission. The car has no clutch to work with. Like all automatics it is basic boring driving.
