I think it was about 1986 or 87 that the last 3 on the tree was built, on a Chevy pickup, and yes, with bench seats.

Most police interceptor vehicles have a colum shift. Most 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups still do. No manual transmission option.

Mercedes have a puny little stick attached to the steering column. Seriously tiny even compared to a normal column shift. I guess it's electronic, rather than mechanical. 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Gearshift Interior Photo | Automotive.com

They apparently need the room in the console between the seats for the COMAND system, which is the complicated controls for the radio, navigation, etc.

Many people here are not getting the thrust of the OP's question...


To me a column shifter is for a manual transmission equipped car , along with a clutch pedal.


Having a vehicle with an automatic trans , with a gear selector on the steering column, is not the same thing, at all.
