Never thought much of putting a 4 banger, no matter what you call it, in big sedans and even trucks. They don't even work all that well in small cars. C300 of ours is one jerky, noisy car. Maybe Cadillac is on to something because their base engine in the CT6 is now a 6. They even put a 4 in the Jaguar. Who's next?

The number of cylinders really doesn't mean a whole lot anymore. Engine technology has come a long way.
If all our semi-trucks pulling 80,000lbs down the road can do that with inline 6's, then you can probably make a 4 cylinder work in just about any car/light truck application if someone set out to do so.

That being said, in this case they are replacing the base 2.0L (237HP/258 Torque) with a V6 that produces 335 HP and 284 torque, so they are essentially chopping off the entry level powertrain option for that car. For a big luxury sedan I can understand that. I have driven CTS models with that engine and the CTS was very "blah" to drive with it, let alone a larger/heavier CT6.

If they were replacing the 2.0L with a V6 that had similar power ratings that would be another story. Who's to say in the future that 335/284 V6 isn't replaced with a more powerful 4 cylinder. (Like Ford's 2.7L Ecoboost with 325HP / 400 torque. That would be a better engine in the CT6 - 400 torque vs 284.)

...Cadillac also had to create price space between the CT5 and CT6. I'm guessing a V6 equipped CT5 would cross into the price point of a 2.0 CT6.

Only here, where there are no displacement taxes.

i have a 2 liter turbo in my BMW 228I and it works very well in my opinion...just not as well as my 6.2 liter supercharged V8 in my Charger Hellcat. I would prefer the 6 cylinder over my 2.0 4 cylinder but that turbo 4 does pretty well all things considered.

A noisy bumble bee sounding four cylinder has no place in a luxury car, it really cheapens it IMO. The whole point in buying a Cadillac is for a silky smooth and quiet powertrain.

One of the advantages of turbo engines is you can downspeed them since you can get more peak torque at lower RPM's. Many people have the perception that turbo engines are whiny or noisier than their non-turbo counterpart and that is not always the case. The newer tech turbo motors by most manufacturers are pretty darn quiet, even when hammering the accelerator.

Not to mention when inside the cabin the insulation and pumped-in noise can really take care of some of that, too.

I used to be anti 4 banger but after driving the new RDX 2.0T and the ND2 2.0 Na Miata I’m in love.

I hate these small motors like 1.5 turbos in Malibus, or 3 cylinders in BMW 3 series, also 2.4 is the sweet spot for 4 cylinders. I think the 2.0 Honda's are a little coarse, while the 2.4's are silky smooth for 4 cylinders.
