That's a shame, was it your truck? I put a lock on my filler when gas was approaching $5.00 but I never thought anyone would stoop this low.
Someone who would cause $500+ in damage to get a gallon or so out of your tank is really sad. Hopefully karma will visit them, but it seems that doesn't happen frequently enough.
Punching a hole in the tank to steal gas was pretty common for a while. It is faster and easier to hide than siphoning. For a larger vehicle like a pick up, if the tank is full, and they have enough gas cans, they might get 25 gallons. That is $50. That is all they frequently get when they rob a 7-11 cash register. If they are willing to shoot someone for a chance at $50, they will certainly punch hole in a plastic gas tank for that much. Here, they probably need gas and lack money. Rather than stealing money and buying gas, they just steal the gas.
Sometimes they even punch into metal gas tanks. All they need is a punch and a hammer, or a small hand powered or battery drill. Matter of seconds and then a few minutes to collect the gas.
Never underestimate how petty a petty thief can be.
I knew a guy that had a business in a bad neighborhood......they would leave the trucks unlocked in the fenced yard to prevent broken windows. Worked for years until the thieves started stealing the batteries out of the trucks! Used battery = $7 each at the scrap yard!
