Another former VW owner who got a lemon and has said never again so I understand where you're coming from.
It's not a luxury car, but the rebooted for 2017 Subaru Impreza is getting some decent buzz and they've got a five door/hatch option. Sounds like they've upgraded both interior and ride quality beyond what was already a very solid small car.
Not that this is luxury... but a loaded up kia soul is pretty nice with heated/cooled seats, pano sunroof and great infotainment system. Kia is doing a refresh this coming year too I believe.
Did you forget about that little emissions issue they're having?
That is a big problem in some states and a tiny problem in most. But I suspect people have either arranged to sell their TDIs back to VWoA or they are keeping them. Finding one being offered for sale could be a problem.

This is funny because out of all the car photos everyone on this thread has mentioned, I like this vehicle the best. All the other hatchback/cars mentioned on this thread are ugly and look like soccer mom cars. Perhaps a car/hatchback isn't what I'm looking for...what is a Kia Soul? A small SUV?
It gets called all sorts of things. CUV is a common term. While you're checking that out also check out the Kia Forte5. It's closer to your stated requirements.
OP asks for a luxury hatch and people are suggesting Kia...
ikr! But here's the thing, the OP didn't say a luxury brand hatch just a luxury hatch and the soul with all the bells and whistles has a lot of options most luxury sedans/hatches have. People really do love the soul though. It's small but rides higher like a full size suv. Plus kia is rated #1 for quality by jd powers now. They've got some good cars, even if kia isn't a luxury brand.
