I'm talking cars that seem to last "forever" but still fall under the affordable "beater" category ($1k - $5k range on craigslist).

Any ideas?

I remember back when i was in high school Ford taurus was a "tough" car that was dirt cheap ($1k - $2k), but i've been out of the loop for a while now so i'm wondering what the best "tough" beater type cars are nowaday.

I'm asking for my younger teenage brother who will be hunting for his first car very soon. I'm not in the market for a car myself.

Thanks for the recommendations

Old Buicks also fall in this category.

No. The Crown Victoria is extremely unsafe by modern standards and even of standards of a decade ago. It has no cage. It has no side airbags. It's an ancient 1970s body on frame platform with a tuna can body. Look at the actual ratings:

If it's that dangerous I must be dead because none of my vehicles have had a cage or side airbags. Thank you for pointing that out.

I hope my funeral was nice.

Following your logic, every car is "safe" because the vast majority of people don't die in car crashes...

Technically that's true. Only 3% of drivers get into accidents each year and less than .0001% of drivers die. The driver is the single biggest safety feature of any car.

Remember, the OP is looking for a $1000-3000 beater on CL. NONE of which are going to be "safe" by modern standards. The CV is one of the better beaters out there. Tough, rugged, reliable and hard to kill, and if it does need work, parts are cheap and plentiful. Perfect for a first car.

None of those cars mentioned will last forever. And, in price range you WILL end with a junk if you go that route.
There are several indestructible cars in that price range though. Old diesel Mercedes. Can't kill them.
