I bought my first at age 14, in San Francisco, for $30. A 1958 Chrysler, 8 years old with 60,000 miles on it. It got about 9-10 mpg, but gas was only about 25 cents.
My first car purchase was a 1947 Plymouth in 1958 for $40. My first new car purchase was a VW Bettle for $1,900.00 in 1968. My last new car purchase was 4 months ago with a $41K list price.
In 1977 my first car was a slightly rusty Pinto manuel transmission. I think I paid 700. 00, probably too much. But it lasted about 3 years until a boyfriend smashed it up. I didn't know how to drive a manual trans when I got it but it only took about a week until I got pretty good. Iearned a bit about cars, changing spark plugs, oil, thermostat, brakes. I can't even imagine doing most of that on modern cars. Had the heat manifold, you mean thermostat changed on a 2004 car recently, mechanic had to take so many things apart to get to it. I almost want my old Pinto back.
My first car was a 1978 Chevy Impala that my parents bought for me in 1987. Had slightly more than 100,000 miles on it. Parents paid about $700 for it.
