IF the kids are young or small keep this in mind:

Children ages 8 until 17 are required to wear a seatbelt in all seats.
Children ages 4 until 8 must ride in a child safety seat or booster seat
unless they are over 4 feet 9 inches or weigh more than 40 lbs.
Children under age 4 must be restrained in a child passenger restraint system.
It's tough to load little ones in a small car.

Any car typically used as a hired car. Look at the models offered as luxury sedans on the rental car lists for model names -- they will be full sized American sedans. They will also have generous trunks.
Three people comfortably in the back seat? Sorry if you don't want a larger vehicle but that is exactly what you need, even if they are kids. remeber, kids grow. And if one or two of them are young you may need car seats which require even more width.
I know you don't want to hear this but you need a full sized SUV based on a 1/2 ton truck. They are the only vehicles made now that will work as they have the width (shoulder room) that anything smaller just dosen't have. The next option would be the modern day full sized sedan with open trunck----a 1/2 ton pickup with rear seating. And I don't likeseeing me type this but a (gasp! mini van might work as well. I personally don't see any other options as vehicles are just too narrow these days.
If you really don't believe that, go check out assorted "full sized" sedans at your local lots and see how they fit in the rear. I just don't see it being possible anymore in a car base on you stating you "don't want to short change someone" or something relating to the poor kid who has to sit in the middle>
Anything built in the '50s, '60s, or early '70s by the "Big Three".
My personal choices would be "orphan" cars, though. Specifically, the 1954 Hudson Hornet or the 1954 Kaiser Manhattan.
Best I know of are the Holdon Commodore, Chevy SS, Pontiac G8. Alll pretty much the same car with different names really.
Older Chrysler Town & Country is very very comfortable. You can find them in really good shape because they were popular with older people who did not drive much and kept it int heir garage.
BMW 7 series is decent. Not as comfortable in the back as the aforementioned,but not bad.
