Yep, and this was for just a "blade", meaning a programmed key without the fob. My VW Rabbit needs all keys custom cut by someone (the dealer does not cut them) and then it has to be programmed, which is another charge.

I didn't feel like buying the key fob, which costs around $350.00. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yup. Don't lose it now. It was possible in the past to get keys cut by a locksmith but now they are very specialized. Almost impossible to get the car going without one so they have you by the walls. Errm, wallets.

If nothing else, ODanny . . . this should teach you to hold on to your keys.

Don't feel bad,I paid over 300 bucks. I lost my key fob with all of my work keys on it on the job. I had a spare key fob at home, and I had my son bring it to me. I felt I needed a spare, so I bite the bullet and bought a new one. About three weeks after I paid over 300.00 bucks, somebody found my keys at work down in the bottom of one our machines. You can imagine how I felt, now I had three key fobs.

About 7 years ago, I had to go to the Chevy dealer after one Thanksgiving I came out of a store to find my side view mirror sitting in the back of my truck.. The asshat that broken it off was at least considerate enough to pick it up off the ground and put it in the bed of the truck..

If I recall, it was about $150 for a side view mirror.. I was shocked. The guy at the dealership smiled at me and said something along the lines of "Be glad you weren't the last guy in here.. You just had a mirror.. He had a Cadillac and his mirror was powered, with the integrated turn signal and was heated.. His mirror cost $650"

For the rest of you, check reprogramming for your car on YouTube. I have been able to program fobs for a PT Cruiser even though the dealer said impossible. IIR, I needed two working keys, so the time to do this is while you still have two working. I'll have to check on how to do keys, though . . .

I've heard of people buying the keys on ebay, then having them programmed, but don't know any specifics. I'm just hanging onto my keys for dear life...

In all my years...35 of driving, I've only been locked out of my car one time...so that's $75...it'd be less if you had AAA. A spare costs way too much unless you are the type to lock yourself out all the time.

Found a car fab for a VW one time and when I found the lady who they belonged to he hugged for like a good 10 mins and it was a TIGHT hug! The ex-wife didn't likely. I knew the keys were expensive even some 10 years ago.
