Thank for all the input. I've been on the road a little more than usual the past couple days, and I've been playing attention to the black vs. chrome trim. Also the wheels -- that was not something I had particularly noticed before, but yeah, definitely a statement.
The other thing I noticed is that many cars with black trim around the windows have tinted windows as well. I don't know anything about tinting. Is it regulated state by state? Does it make the driver's view worse? I've seen all four windows tinted, but more often just the rear ones. Is that a regulatory thing?
Tint is regulated by each state, they determine where it can be applied and what percentage. NH for examples doesn't allow any tint forward of the driver.
It can have an affect on visibility when it's dark out.
But I'm curious about what impressions you have of a car that has black trim around the windows and perhaps at the front bumper, instead of chrome-colored trim.
I think of the black as more understated.
What do you think?
On trucks, I still prefer lots of chrome. Chrome grille, chrome wheels. On sports cars, black trim is perfectly fine on black cars, maybe certain colors of blue. However, what I can't stand are black wheels on a white car. To me, looks as if the hub caps are missing. I think it looks even worse when someone plasti-dips their wheels in a black, matte, finish, and puts them on a white car. I have hated that look! I'm not much of a fan of that look on a red car either. In my opinion, if you're going to go with a black trim, the trim should have gloss to it, with an accent color to set it off.

I usually tone down the chrome a little but don't eliminate. Good example on my old Legacy GT Spec B. The upper grill was all chrome stock. Blacked out the surround but left the center.

On a truck like the F-150, I think the black trim on the FX4 looks a lot better than the bling chrome on the Lariat, but that’s just me.
For wheels I do not black or chrome, just give me regular alloys. Black accents are okay, just not the whole wheel.
I think chrome only looks good on old classic cars. On newer vehicles it gives it an old person in a Buick look.
