Some cities rethink devices as drivers pay heed, reducing fine revenue.
Last week, Dallas officials reviewed the numbers and decided that a quarter of the cameras they had installed to catch motorists running red lights were too effective. So they shut them down.
Yet another piece of evidence that red-light cameras little to do with safety and everything to do with revenue. It amazes me that there is still anyone who doubts this.
Awww poor Dallas. They only collected 11 million....We used to have speed cameras here in BC. Most folks at the time used cruise control to prevent getting ticketed, so revenues went way down and the cameras disappeared. Yup it's not about safety...It's about money.
"Dallas lawmakers originally estimated gross revenue of $15 million from their 62 cameras this fiscal year, which ends June 30. But City Manager Mary Suhm estimated last week that the city would fall short by more than $4 million."

The pitiful and corrupt part is the "safety" companies' cut of the pot is typically much larger than the city's.
Around here, they have the cameras set to take the pic if a car crosses the white line (stop line?) AFTER the light turns red. If any part of your car is past that white line...you're OK. So, no yellow light runners are caught.
IMO, if you ENTER an intersection AFTER the light has turned red, you deserve a ticket!
With that said...we have one locality here that is notorious for SHORT yellow lights....now that's dirty pool!
I thought the idea was to keep people from running the light.
Normal, uncorrupted-by-power people like many of us on the boards would think that.
The true purpose of the lights is almost always revenue. That's why they often get a short yellow along with the scamera system, much easier to catch people if the yellow is 2-3 seconds rather than 4-6 seconds.
Some scamera company will blow into town, make a pitch to a power broker in the city, and sell the idea to the dopey citizens as "safety" and to the elites as $$$.
