Which begs the question, How did he get the owners phone number? Ppl dont leave their cell numbers in their cars anymore. So I find the stealing of the car convincing, just not buying it that he called the owner up.

When I worked at a Volvo dealership, customer had his car towed in from airport after returning from trip because it would not start. Turns out he left it running until it ran out of gas.
Apparently he assumed car would shut itself off after he and the fob walked away. We confirmed it would not by starting car, then driving the fob down the street a few miles, and car kept running.
ISTM some brands/years now do shut off if fob loses contact with car.

Perhaps phone numbers were found in the cars hands free Bluetooth system ?
I bet California has a law that if the owner didn't help the thief start the car and the thief got emotional stress, then he could sue the owner for over a million.
