Very small and very old. If you are a skilled mechanic, I have recently sold a 1994 BMW 318Ci for $2000 which was very enjoyable, after I put about $2000 in parts into it.
"For an example"
If you look at them, you can see you would be dead meat in an accident. Why not just get a used KIA SUV until you get better job? Honestly, you definitely aren't looking for a convertible for cool factor if you have no real money to put on decent one.
Not really, you can find good ones in the $10-12k range which is probably about as affordable as they will ever be again. They hold their value pretty well, and probably will climb in value over time. Not too sure MX-5 ever will.

The only $10-12k s2000s around here have much higher mileage than MX-5s.... makes sense... they were a premium vehicle and highly sought after. As you already pointed out, they hold their value well. A good thing but not helpful to a budget minded shopper. Also, MX-5s have been made since 1989, so there are tons of them in the market... there is one on the used market at almost any price range. Also price out parts; engine trans etc of a MX-5 is going to be far cheaper than any s2000 drivetrain component.
Last year, I purchased a 2006 NC with 13k on the clock for $11.5k. You will not come even close to that in an S2000 with that mileage.
With that said, the OP's situation places a priority on budget... s2000s simply is pushing it. If the OP's priority was a weekend racer with a high budget, sure... s2000 can be included This isn't the case for the OP. As a few people already mentioned, a tight budget (guessin) of a $30k salary the miata/mx-5 is practically the only sport car (RWD) / convertible option. Everything else is pushing it.
A used one. Look for an older one with low mileage, preferably always kept in a garage, and professionally maintained. Ask for maintenance records. Someone who keeps the records, and has all the periodic maintenance done at the prescribed intervals would be what you want. A friend of ours recently sold her one-owner, 14 year old BMW convertible with only 50K miles for $5500. It was an excellent buy for whoever bought it. Professionally maintained, and with newly re-upholstered leather front seats.
I’m hoping to get a new car in a few months but it has to be a convertible.
I was looking at the Mazda Miata MX-5, Ford Mustang and Corvette Stingray.
I am not knowledgeable with cars so I want to know what other cars are out there to consider.
I would go for the Miata if money is tight at all. No contest. You can find used Miatas out there in good shape, if you don't know cars you need to hire someone to help you sort the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. If you are one of those "used cars are other people's problems" types, at least go CPO.
You will be wanting at least an awning to park under. Convertibles don't in general do well parked out in the weather.
I’m amused there are so many haters & wannabe financial advisors here.
