AVs have enough hurdles that idiot users won't be a significant issue. You know the problem with trying to make things foolproof...

Don't worry, there're more reasons to not like autonomous cars than the idiot like that

What's the point of having an autonomous vehicle if you have to monitor it all the time? Research shows that people can't move from "I'm doing something else" to "I'm on top of it" at the flip of a switch. Moving from one activity to another takes precious seconds during which the brain is moving away from one activity and unclouding itself to make room for the other activity. Next, the brain gets oriented to the "new" activity--where are we? how fast are we going? what's "the" danger? By the time all this re-enagagement work has been accomplished the obstacle that required engagement--a child in the road, say, or a suddenly stopped car--is probably already been impacted.

The short story is this: if you have to stay on top of it when in autonomous mode then you're not really getting much advantage from autonomous mode.

At this point, NOTHING is going to throw a wrench into SD deployment, too much money been sunk into this over the past years, it IS the future of transportation.

Im sure they had some die hard folks trying to hold onto horse and buggy too, Id imagine they used some of the same tactics that those opposed to SD do, too dangerous, its too soon for this kind of tech, etc etc, but we all know, the motor vehicle replaced the horse and buggy, and even though there are some negative aspects to cars, they still took over anyway and are more practical, SD will be the same way imo, sure there will be some problems, but overall, its going to be a good thing.

We can't even keep a "smart" thermostat safe from hackers. You think I'll ever fully trust a computer with my life to drive me around? Not in this lifetime or the next. The technology might be sound, but there are just too many idiots out there with a sick sense of humor for me to trust anyone but myself when it comes to something as serious as this.

Don't want to drive? Take the bus, plane, train, cab, Lyft, Uber, whatever. Anything but Google.

until such time as an unhackable computer can be created, and true artificial intelligence can be created, there will never be an autonomous vehicle created. and imo that is a good thing, since i will never trust any machine to do my driving for me.
