Activating a turn signal takes just a flick of the finger, but that simple move apparently is too much for lots of drivers out there. A new patent filing by Tesla seeks to change that. The company envisions an automated signal, one that senses when a driver is getting ready to turn and activates the blinker on its own, reports CNET.

This Might Be a Cure for Drivers Who Don't Signal

This may be another futile effort to "idiot- proof" via technology.
IE: someone doing a "James Bond Left". Where you move to the left lane, signal left, and then turn right.
If instead, the car auto- signaled left, and the driver changed their mind at the last second, but then got hit by a car behind who had steered in anticipation of the left .... you know they're going to sue the autopilot manufacturer.

I signal always when changing lanes and most other places.. But.. I'll admit.. If i'm in the right hand turn only lane.. I shouldn't have to tell you what I'm going to do. I'm totally with you that I should signal to get into that lane.. But not that i'm making a right from a right turn only lane.

The cure for thoughtless people who refuse to use their turn signals is a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Out here, people do signal....after they've already started their move. I don't see what good it is to throw on your blinker when you are already halfway into my lane with no warning forcing me to slam on my brakes because I happened to look down at my speedometer for a second.

I usually throw the blinker on, wait a couple seconds and then move. Sometimes, unfortunately, that results in said idiot in the lane next to me to hit the gas and close the gap. That's why I stopped wondering why people no longer use their turn signal.

I'm one of very few drivers who signals for every lane change or direction change. I like efficiency and find that it's helpful for the drivers around me to make their judgments when I'm driving. In all my years of driving, I've never needed to refill the blinker fluid.

As if Tesla doesn't have better things to worry about.

I live in SoCal, always use my turn signals, and the last time I checked, I have male plumbing.

I am bothered more by the vehicles that keep the turn signal blinking, long after the turn, or when people enter a freeway and signal to oncoming vehicles they are entering, by having the left blinker flashing, then forget to turn it off,and travel for miles with it blinking.

Bob.
