Leave your “FWD cars aren’t sports cars” comments behind please. We know the best sports cars (two or four door) are RWD.
Back to the OP's original post.
Some sedans have better designed suspension and steering. Also higher quality components. Do give a better tighter "sportier" ride. Some of the new sedans also have computer generated suspension "modes" that change the driving characteristics. Sport Mode, etc.
The terms used are manufacturers marketing. Accept the marketing phrases or reject it.
Most of the general public couldn't tell the difference between a McPherson strut and a mass airflow sensor. AND they don't care.
Infiniti G sedan. The early years where you could get them with the 6-spd and around 300HP. All the same mechanical underpinnings as the 2-door and 350/370z.
I had the AWD version and it was RWD-biased. Was definitely a fun, sporty car to drive.
Sister had a maxima around the same time. Same engine, it was quick....but torque steer. Wow
Mazda Rx8 - 4 doors but the 2 rear ones are "clam style" and open the opposite way.
The Chevyy SS gets better mileage And doesn’t burn oil like that rotary does. I’m a huge Mazda fan but if I were to buy one I’d rip that engine out and put a supercharged /turbocharged Miata engine in it.
To me "sports car" means two seater roadster with a soft top. All others are pretenders.
Exactly.
A 4 door car is a sedan.
You can call it "sporty" and it could have "sporty" performance and looks but nobody ever believed that the Crown Victoria "Sport" (2002 to 2006) was a "sports car."
Sports car and FWD are oxymorons. There is no way around it.
They created the class called sports sedan, but I would not include any FWD in that class. Sports cars are made for driving, and FWD is not for driving cars. It is not a case of better vs less better sports cars, FWD simply is not a driving oriented car it is not a sports car at all. Not can sedan really be called a sports car, unless they soemhow magically shorten the wheelbase and turning radius.
