This kind of tax hurts ordinary working people. The government is desperate to make up the gas tax shortfall that happened due to covid lockdowns, but this is the wrong way to do it.
Let’s get all the politicians work for free like Trump did and put their salary towards the infrastructure bill.

Just checked the IRS website. It seems the IRS allows for 56 cents per mile, if driven for business use.

Plan on this being the approx rate for driving all miles...

Hopefully you and others bashing "socialism" here are not cashing your stimulus checks. That's taxpayer funded "socialism" even when Trump did it.

And of course, hopefully you're not getting Social Security or Medicare. Or using public schools and public parks. Or using the public highways. Or ever had firefighters show up at your house or burning business. All of which have been big Socialist programs that conservatives decried as the "path to communism" in the past.

I have to laugh at how dumb so many conservatives are these days. Their own politicians cut trillions in taxes for the wealthy, but you think they are for the little guys.
If people like Bezos paid even the actual top tax rate of 36%, he'd pay 2-3 billion in taxes, Which would leave him with 10+ billion. I'd bet he could survive on that. And closing the tax loopholes for that group of 1%ers (or even 10%ers) would pay for a lot of the infrastructure that's crumbling. But you guys that make little money will scream and cry about that, even though you'd never be affected.

I mean, it never ceases to amaze me: "This doesn't benefit me personally, so why should I pay taxes for it?

"The VA doesn't benefit me, so screw those 25 year olds with traumatic brain injuries. Medicare doesn't help me out, so grandpa can get bent. I don't watch Sesame Street, so PBS? Hell with it. My kids are not in school, so public schools can shut down for all I care. The bridges are collapsing, but damn if I'm going to pay to drive on it."

Like, listen chuckleheads, we're trying to have a society here, and part of that is taking care of your fellow human beings. Paying taxes for things you might not use is part of that. And if you view that as theft by the Left, you're an idiot who can go live on your own in the tundra and see how well you do.

As an EV driver, I have no problem paying a mileage tax to cover the infrastructure. And if I'm taxed the same way on my Suburban, so be it. Especially if it means I know that bridge I'm about to tow my travel trailer over is going to stay up and not collapse at any moment.

Nah, the entire US would shut down and the economy would crash if it was that much. It would be Revolution 2.0, and people would oust the politicians either legally or not, and do away with the tax or reduce its rate significantly.

for free? Trump made millions off being President. He charged foreign dignitaries millions over the 4 years to stay at Mara Lago and Trump hotels in DC. And he bilked you guys for millions in money for "legal fees" Think about it, why would a supposed billionaire need money from YOU to pay his legal fees? It was all a grift. He was supposed to take care of the infrastructure (one of the promises he made while campaigning) and nothing.

It only seems fair for everyone to have skin in the game and some have a lot more than others...

Currently San Francisco is paying $61,000 a year for one tent in a site to shelter homeless...

Exactly. Because you never know when you're going to need that service, yourself. And even if you don't personally use it, we don't live alone.

Interesting discussion and I have the privilege if knowing some very principled individuals.

My step grandfather came here with nothing and the first each morning in his tool and die shop and the last to leave... worked into his 80's a few months short of his passing... never accepted a penny of Social Security...said America had given him everything and more so he never drew...

Also never filed unemployment saying leave it for those with no other hope...

I think he lived Kennedy's creed... ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country...

I hear you. But, you gotta realize that the people that float these trial balloons have absolutely zero idea the impact of their policies. None what-so-ever.
Remember "why" we have governments. (It's so stupid people can have jobs, too.) After all, stupid people have bills too!
