Sadly the Toyota Corolla GTS wasn’t included in this test. Perhaps it went beyond their set price limit. I was not long out of high school and these all seemed the type of car I would have wanted if I could have afforded. I would have wanted the Cavalier but not as the Z24. In some years you could get a regular Cavalier in the RS package with the V6 and sport tuned suspension. But if the Corolla GTS had been included then that would have been my pick. Seems sad to see the acceleration numbers of these “sports coupes” when remembering how young people ousted after them in those years.

1970s Opel Sport Wagon was a treat. The Bosch fuel injection performed superb at high elevation. The engine was built strong enough to turbo.

2 door wagon handled great and could haul plenty of camping gear. Bikes, and kayak on the roof.

I'd take a Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, Shelby Charger GLHS (3 or 5 dr) , or Shelby Lancer.

Those were awful.......

The Civic SI/GTi/CRX were legends in their time (I didn't own any of them)

Had a Shelby Charger and a Plymouth Laser XT. Loved them both. Trying to find a clean GLHS now, but the prices are crazy. Wouldn't own a Honda if you gave it to me. Well, unless it was a CR500 or a TRX450R.

DW and her ex were serious collectors of GLHs and Shelbs...there is STILL a large following and clubs of mint survivors. My 92 lebaron 'vert is a direct relative - all the parts fit among EEK rather well

Yeah, I can see that. I figured if I could find something nice for around $4k it would be a fun daily driver. Well $4k gets you something that has been sitting behind a barn overgrown with weeds that hasn't run in 20 years. $15k might get you something nice.

I also liked the Conquest TSI/ Mistu Starion, except for the drive train. I found a sweet Starion with an LS /6sp swap but they wanted $25k.

It is interesting that they missed 2 of Nissan's better efforts - the Sentra SE-R and the 240SX. They both seem to fit in the year and price limits. The Sentra SE-R was a wonderful car. Another fun car that came out Sept 1991 was the Mazda MX-3 with the 1.8L V6-dohc.

Of the ones in that article, the answer is pretty easy to narrow down to three:

A2 GTI
CRX Si
EF Civic Si

However, for a 90 I'd actually prefer either a brand new DSM - Talon AWD or Eclipse GSX - or a Celica ST185 GT-Four.
