Yikes - first of all, an engine is an engine - a marine 4-stroke engine is essentially no different from a car's engine. Second, backfires have nothing to do with the intake system - its unburnt fuel firing in the exhaust system.

He is talking about a backfire from unburnt gas thru the intake system;happens all the time. Ever see a carb have flames shootup ;that is a backfire. Can happen with any type intake and makers build the system to stop further dange. In teh old days we called it a carb backfire.

Marine gasoline engines have a "flame arrester" for those backfires.

I've never seen an air cleaner on a marine engine, gas or diesel.....there's no dirt and dust out there on the water.

Car 54 beat me to it - I have seen air filters on some boats, but not all. I would want a filter myself, offhand I would expect K&N's tech support to be able to make a recommendation if they are suitable for marine use or not - offhand I would not see any reason they would not work fine on a boat and essentially never need cleaning because really there is not much dirt in the air over a body of water.

Picked one up today for $55. Should give me an extra 6 HP. Doubt it will help the mpg but I will let you all know if I can tell the difference between 425 HP & 431 HP.
