Sales do not equate to reliability. That's just an indicator of popularity. It's possible to make an extremely reliable vehicle that people won't buy (if it was extremely unattractive for example).

Of course it wasn't the car's fault but I still thought the car was a POS.
I graduated in 1994 and was going to buy a brand new car... back then, I was not into imports and these are what I was considering... (the lot I was going to buy from had a special on the first two below, as they were program cars...
1994 Chevy Beretta (despite watching my neighbors 1988 Beretta fall apart by 1991)
1994 Plymouth Acclaim (YUCK! What was I thinking?!)
1995 Dodge Neon (again, what was I thinking, but they had just came out and the salesman was really talking it up! )

Ended up passing on all....

Then in 1995, got the fever again and checked out the "all-new" 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, 1995 Toyota T100 (which I really liked and these are super trucks - even now) and a 1995 Ford Mustang.

Passed again and bought a then four year old 1991 Camaro RS with 21K actual miles for $7500! Turned out to be a POS that had been totalled (title had been washed) and I ended up selling in 1997 for $3000.

Then March 1, 1997, (I vividly remember this day, because I had just gotten over a severe illness in late February and I had just gotten better and that day was sunny and beautiful... in the lower 80s and I was getting spring fever) and this was just days before my 21st birthday, bought a 1984 Toyota 4wd truck and since then I have always owned at least one Japanese vehicle.

I see about 30 Caprices/Roadmasters on the road everyday, dozens of old Chevy pickups, and a fair share of old luminas and cavaliers... And i live in the absolute worst part of the "rusty" belt.

Some people in my area like to "pimp" those out with the 22" rims and cartoon colored paint. It's absolutely hideous, but hey, to each his own.

I still see lots of the Century/Ciera/6000 bodystyle cars on the road. My mail lady drives an early 90's Ciera, they're pretty tough cars.

Looks an awful lot like the 2006-2008 Vette.

Cosmetically, nothing. Mechanically, it gets a 30 to 36HP boost (depending on standard v. optional exhaust), now rated at max 436HP. But that's been the case since MY2008.

I don't think people won't buy them because their looks, but because they gave themselves bad reputations in the 90's. A lot of people lost their faith in domestic automakers in the 80's and 90's because of reliability issues. But they are all trying to fix that now, but it may be too late.

I personally love the way most American cars look. In my driveway I have a 2008 Chevy Tahoe and a 2007 Ford Explorer. Interior in the Explorer is lacking a little in quality, but it sure does look sharp. The interior in the Tahoe is outstanding build quality.
