I need new tires on my Tahoe and plan on doing some heavy winter travel...possibly a ski trip or two.

I would like to put tires on that are not priced thru the roof and are an excellent all-terrain. What's really good in the snow?

It's a 04 Z71

go to tirerack.com thats your best bet. Put your vehicle info in, and it will list all compatible tires with ratings and reviews.

I'm assuming the Tahoe is 4WD. I'd say look at Tire Rack's survey tables, most any "real truck" tire with full tread depth should do well in snow.

The Radial T/A "Trail T/A" and "Rugged Trail T/A" etc. have been around for a long time, probably because they offer good performance for the buck.

You could go with a separate set of steel wheels with dedicated snow tires, but I doubt that's really needed in your case.

Now if you want to get *really* serious, you could consider a set of chains to go with the new tires - again probably overkill. But if you have the room to store them in the truck, and don't mind carrying them, could come in handy.

Chains are easier to put on *before* you get stuck, but you probably already knew that...

My number one choice would be the Blizzaks. Here is the DM-Z3

and here is the Blizzak W965 which does just as well as the DM-Z3 set.

Second choice would be the Goodyear Ultragrip SUV

I personally think the Michelin and Pirelli offerings stink big-time for these vehicles. Had a set of Michelins on mine and you couldn't give me another set of those crappy tires. Friend had a set of the Pirelli Scorpions on his truck and he might as well have been running slicks.

These opinions come from 20 years spent in Northern Maine (Caribou area) as well as many years spent in the UP of Michigan before that. Might say I have spent some quality time on snow and ice with my Suburbans, Pick-ups and other trucks. If I can't run studded snows, give me the new Blizzaks for the beasts.

I've done tire testing for the manufacturers and I can tell you the Bridgestone Blizzak is superior overall to the Michelins.

Nokian also makes an excellent SUV/Truck tire and I done a lot with those and they are awesome, but the price is high.

I'd either go with Bridgestone or Nokian. That's the best it gets. I think if you live in bad winter conditions the extra dollars are worth the extra grip.

Buy Blizzaks if you can afford a dedicated snow tire. For an all-purpose tire, I like the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo.

Having lived in Lake Tahoe, there is only one choice. Studded tires. Anything less will put you in a ditch......especially an SUV, or P/U.
