Anyone have one or have experience with one?

This summer hubby's car is paid off so I'm socking aside his car payment for a few months and then selling my car so I can 'upgrade'.

I'd really, really, really, really like to have another sports car. I miss that thing so much I could cry. Power under the hood is an addictive thing.

Anyway, for now I think I need something less expensive, so I was thinking maybe a 'beach car' as I call them. Something small and SUVish and convertible. Chevy Tracker, Suzuki........ crud. Don't remember the name of theirs. Anyway, something along those lines. I really don't want a Wrangler. They all seem so ............... rugged for lack of a better word. At least the ones I've looked at. And they seem so over priced, like you're paying for the Jeep name. Not my style!

Maybe a Miata type car too. It's not going to be a family vehicle. We've got hubby's full size SUV for that. I drive 4 hours a day for work, so I spend 20 hours every week in it. I want something I like that's dependable. Good on fuel would obviously be a bit of a plus at 55,000 miles a year.

So, any thoughts?

Probably a Miata would be better for what you describe than a tracker or similar.

I should elaborate on the Miata - I think it would work for you because they are available in large numbers on the used market, they are reliable, the top goes down, they are OK on gas, they are in general economical and fun to operate.

Thanks to you both. I do like the Miata. My parents had one as did a friend. Drove them both and they were a blast to drive. I'll have to take another look at them!

The Suzuki model is called the Sidekick, and is the same vehicle as the Tracker, sans the Chevy/Geo label. They are decent vehicles, though somewhat underpowered. By now, however, they will be a bit aged, and will probably be a bit worn, unless you can find a good used, garage kept, low mileage vehicle. Because there aren't that many of them around to begin with, that would be an unlikely find.

The earlier models came in a two-door model with either a hard or soft top. Later, the four-door hardtops were introduced in addition to the two-door models. Later still, the two-door models were dropped and the Suzuki model became the Vitara. When they started putting in a small V-6, they started calling them the Grand Vitara. This model was also sold in a stretched version called the XL-7.

There was another variation of the Sidekick that was only sold for a few years ('96 to '98) called the X-90. It was a two-door model, with a T-top and a trunk. It was a rather strange looking vehicle, in my opinion, but looks somewhat like a cross between the Miata and the Sidekick, so it could be just what you're looking for. Here's some info on it (from Wikipedia):
