and you go into a Buick Dealer. You can't decide if you want to buy a leftover Skylark or the new Century. Both cars have exactly the same engine and levels of trim. The salesman goes down on the Century price, bringing it down to the cost of the Skylark(this would, in reality, be a bit far fetched, but what i am trying to do is consider which car would you buy assuming the prices are the same)

I ask this because my uncle bought a green Skylark in Sept of 72 which lasted 13 years. I never got a chance to ask him if he ever considered the Century before he bought it

I suspect the Skylark probably got better gas mileage than the Century. I always remember the back lights of the Skylark which were surrounded by rubber, Very attractive car, not as aerodynamic as the Century but probably a bit less less bulk when driving in city traffic

In late September 1972 I would be getting ready for my upcoming 6th birthday party in November.

I would buy the '72, because in '73 the compression on GM engines dropped dramatically, taking power with it. I doubt the '72 got better mileage than the '73, probably a wash.

If your question is whether brand names matter, I say no. My grandparents had a Buick Century for the longest time. To my knowledge that car is still running. It's been in our family for over 25 years.

Well I was not even born then - that would be about 4 years later.

If you said August 1972, I would have said my 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville was being manufactured... It was a very early 1973 model. Despite the 72' and 73' being the same basic body style, on some things, I have to order 1972 Grand Ville parts for it- such as the master cylinder will only work for a 1972 Grand Ville, because the 72s had deep piston MS's and the 73s had shallow piston MS's. Mine being an extremely early 1973, had the 1972 brake booster, requiring the 72 DPMS.

My grandpa had one of those green 1972 Buick Skylark Custom 2dr hardtop a few years ago. It was light green with black interior and a white top. It had a 350, automatic, A/C, AM radio, etc. He was not the original owner, but I went with him when he bought it from the older lady that bought it new. I had my 1972 Buick Electra at the time and I told her about it and she said she remembered looking at those too, but decided on a smaller car, so went with the Skylark Custom coupe. This was in late 71' so the Century had not come out yet.

Personally I would have chosen a 1972 Buick Skylark Custom 4dr hardtop.... or MAYBE a 1973 Century Luxus 4dr sedan.

I think I would have gone for the muscular looking A body Skylark instead of the collonade style Century.
