81 Ford Mustang, 200ci (3.3L) I6, 4 spd overdrive.
The engine dated back to a design originated in the early 60s. The intake manifold is part of the head with a mount for a tiny single barrel carb. It has a short stroke, but still didn't rev that high. There was a good amount of low end torque, but it quickly ran out of hp once it got going.
The transmission was a 4 speed with the 4th gear being overdrive. Imagine a 5 speed transmission with no fifth gear. Going from 3rd to 4th would cause the engine to bog out unless the rpms were way up. Hills were pain because i was either winding out the engine or bogging it.
There were so many vacuum lines and emissions doodads that it looked like someone just tossed a bunch of hoses and solenoids under the hood.
Handling wasn't that great with Macpherson struts and a live rear axle. It had a tendency to push (oversteer) in the corners.
Bought a multicolored 80 Toyota Celica with bald tires for $300 when the Mustang was giving me emissions problems and couldn't get it registered. Compared to the Mustang, this beater was a fantastic car with a proper 5speed and a willing 20R motor. The handling was so good that i'd confidently power slide the car at will on the bald tires. I always felt like i knew what the car was doing.
The car I still miss is my 82 Saab 900 Turbo. I've had a Supra, a C4 Corvette, a classic Mustang, and some others, but that's the only car i catch myself browsing through the classifieds for to see what's out there. Well, the classic Mustang was pretty fun, too.
I have never owned a good car, foreign or domestic. But the worst by far was my `98 Nissan Sentra. Basically for the amount of miles it had, and the amount of problems I had with it.
Multiple electrical problems. The horn would go off by itself I had to remove a metal plate in the steering wheel that was shorting the switch out. The ignition gradually got hard to turn until one day it wouldn't. Sensor problems, wire harnesses with poor connections, constant brake problems, the car started rusted at 50k miles and oil leaks, suspension problems. I had alot of trouble trying to find some of the parts for this thing too.
List of cars I have owned:
`88 Chevy Corsica
`92 Honda Civic
`87 Nissan Pathfinder
`88 Honda CRX
`90? Hyundai Sonota
`92? Ford Tempo
`98 Nissan Sentra
`07 Chevy Cobalt SS
1981 Mercury Cougar. 4-Door. 3.3L I-6; 0-60 in 5.9 minutes.
LOL, and that's probably with the car rolling downhill!
A former co-worker had one of those, and I think it was about 4 or 5 years old when he sold it. I remember it had less than 30,000 miles on it because it spent more time sitting around or in the shop, than on the road!
1975 Buick Skylark. Everything needed to be replaced all of the time.
