I park my own vehicle and never had anyone park mine.
Remember the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Remember the scene where the gang reluctantly hands the classic Ferrari California Spider's keys over to the valet? And remember the ensuing hoonage by the valet and his coworker that results in sparks flying from the Ferrari's undercarriage and way too many miles showing on the car's odometer? How could you not, as it led to the film's memorable climax where the unlucky sports car ends up in a heap after Cameron unsuccessfully tries to reverse those extra miles away.
I read that this was all staged. I personally was a valet back in Scottsdale, and honestly I would step on it with some of the high end sports cars. However, I would never do anything like what was in this video. I personally do not believe this really happened.
My FIL tells a story about leaving, his then brand new Caprice, at a valet parking lot in NY. As he is walking down the street, he sees his car go whizzing by him....He goes back to retrieve his car...only to have it returned over an hr. later. Two valets went out on a food run using his car!
They should have a sign at the valet pickup point that has the approximate mileage that the vehicle will travel during the parking process. Your trip odometer, usually, will have a resolution of 1/10th of a mile. That takes care of the joy ride problem. Punching and beating it to the parking spot is a different matter, perhaps a small g-force sensor could be installed.
No one drives my cars but me or those I trust, and random valets aren't on that list. I'm also one of the rare Americans that parks in the back of a parking lot and enjoys walking a hundred yards.
I would never let a valet drive my car. That's about as bad as when you take a high performance car to a shop and let them have it to work on overnight. Sometimes you have punks working there that think it's ok to "test drive" your vehicle.
