I have a 2004 chevy silverado 2500 and the change oil soon light came on. I serviced the oil about 1k miles ago. When i called my local chevy dealer they would not tell me how to turn it off. They said i could bring it in and they would "only" charge me 1/2 hour labor to shut it off. Is it that complicated, or are they trying to "F" me??? Any one know how to shut it off? Thanks
GM Oil Life System Resetting
The engine oil life monitor will indicate when to change the engine oil - usually between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 16 000 km (10,000 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the CHANGE OIL SOON light may be displayed before 5 000 km (3,000 miles). The vehicle must not be driven more than 16 000 km (10,000 miles) or 12 months without an oil change.
Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed, use the following procedure.
Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
Fully push and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
If the Change Oil Soon light flashes, the system is resetting.
Start the vehicle.
The oil life will change to 100%.
If the Change Oil Soon light comes back on, the system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

That's how it worked in my '98 Chevy, but in my newer one I use the trip odometer button. Press it until it reads "oil life **%", then hold it down until it reads "oil life 100%". That's it.
Actually, you can check the "oil life" anytime you are driving using the trip odometer. I'm not sure what percentage it has to get to before the "change oil" signal comes on. I never let mine get that far.

Are you kidding? They have to milk you for money some how.
Yeah I know this doesn't really answer your question but the truth is they make todays automobiles to where you have to pay them to fix a simple thing that only yesterday you could have done yourself.
For GM trucks and many cars. When I worked in the shop we used to turn on the ignition (but don't start the engine), wait about 10 seconds, then push the gas pedal firmly to the floor 3 times in a row. This would reset the oil life back to 100%.

This is how it is done for my 04 Pontiac gto. My owner's manual stated to push down on the gas pedal 2 times which was incorrect.
Stealerships seam to prey on those who don't know.
On both of my newer vehicles with oil change indicators, the info on how to reset it is in the owner's manual. On my Chevy Colorado pickup, it is reset by turning the ignition to run, selecting oil life on the driver information panel by pushing the trip odometer reset, then pressing and holding the trip odometer reset to restore oil life to 100%. I've had to reset it myself a couple times immediately after getting the oil changed. It seems some places don't reset it when they change your oil.
