have you thought about a jeep wrangler they are fun little trucks and decent on gas with a 4 cylinder the is also the VW bettle or mazda miata both are fun economical and if a 6'4" guy can get into a miata. your daughter should have no problem at all and they have a huge following and parts and repairs are pretty basic and simple all would be great long lasting first car that hold's their re-sale value esp the maita it holds it's value quite well and has all the modren saftey features.
There is no way I'd get a teenager a car with the horsepower/capabilities most of these cars have, no matter how "mature" (s)he may seem. Even mature teenagers are far more prone to occasional bouts of poor judgment than your average adult. And when my (future) teenager has one of those bouts, (s)he will not have 200-275HP available under his/her right foot.
If -- if -- my teenager gets his/her own car, it will be one of my choosing, not his/hers.
IIRC you live in a warm pleasant climate like Florida, right? So I am the first to vote for the A4 convertible.
I'm taking you at your word that this kid is responsible and will take care of the car, and not go nuts and wreck it.
The only bad choice I see is the Landy - the newer Landys are thirsty, break down often, and are expensive to repair/maintain, with no real upside that I can see unless your daughter is a hard-core off-roader (you didn't mention that if she is)..
Too bad it's impractical to import a Zhiguli and put an M3 engine in it...
The Miata, while not on the list, is another good choice, I would personally prefer it to anything on the list.
What about a Nissan 350Z? Cheap enough to put some dings on, safe enough to make sure there's none on her, and very good looking (exterior at least).
Just a thought.
Having owned one, I can say with absolute certainty that this is a great way to kill your child. The car is fairly powerful and not an easy one to handle, especially in any kind of inclement weather.
Not to mention that insurance would be sky-high.
OP, just stick with a boring old safe 4-door sedan. The Volvo or the ES are great choices, maybe a little more towards the ES since it is a little more reliable and having driven many of them, I can tell you it's virtually impossible to make it lose control.

I agree, plus allowing a child to chose their car and you pay for it is very irresponsible as a parent. Get her a 5 year old or older vehicle first and then after a few years with no tickets or accidents, then she can get a better car.
