as for the rifle most revered by the US, it would be the M1 garand followed by the M16, then the M14.

this was not a bad rifle either... my father said it was accurate to a fault...…….

I qualified with the M14 7.62 in Marine Corps boot camp and then went through infantry training with the Garand , BAR, and the old Browning LMG. 30-06 all the way. This was in the mid 60’s Vietnam buildup. Never fired an M16. Embassy duty in SE Asia we used pistols, shotguns and private purchase weapons.
