New York is the largest American city. It's also the second-closest major American metro to Europe, after Boston (rank: 11th). The only other metro area that has as much as half of greater New York's population is Los Angeles, which is 3000 miles further from Europe. And metros #3, 4 and 5 are Chicago, Dallas, and Houston, all 1000+ further miles from Europe.
NYC especially if combining JFK and EWR. MIA is next off the top of my head, then LAX, ATL, IAH, ORD in that order. Might be slightly out of order.

Keep in mind that the northern cities all use the polar route to get to Europe, so it’s not really that much farther from Chicago to London than it is from NYC to London- I think the total time difference is about an hour, even though it takes about 2 hours to get between the two.

Boston and DC... you're probably right there to include them. IAH should probably get pulled from my list. But the balance have much more. Especially if you're looking at breadth vs frequency (i.e. ZRH, LIS, TVL, ARN, IST, whatever). Philly has maybe 4-5 destinations. Not even in the running.
