Next summer I will be moving to Maryland to start teaching in the Baltimore City School System. I've heard a lot of bad things (and some good) about the school system- mostly generalizations that "it's dysfunctional" but I really want to know what is working and what isn't. I've heard that some schools (middle schools, I believe) had to close for not making NCLB standards; I've heard they have a new food director who is trying hard to put locally grown and in-house prepared meals in the cafeterias; I have been to Mt Royal a couple of times and saw what the students put up on the walls (both graffiti and physics posters). These things don't seem to jive- why are some schools still failing? So far all I've heard is a lot of finger-pointing. What does everyone love and hate about our schools?

Check out the Baltimore Sun's recent articles on the CEO Andres Alonso, excellent reporting.
