I never lived in Baltimore. I lived in PG County (the worst years of my life), and Montgomery County (not bad). I'm in Chicago now. I do miss my family back in Maryland and it is the longest state I've ever lived in so I know it well than Illinois. Something in me is saying to move back there. I'm considering Baltimore City. If I know PG County sucks and is bad, then Baltimore should be worst off.

I like Baltimore. Hell, I love Baltimore. But, don't think you are going to escape these issues in Baltimore or any other city. If you live in a city, there are going to be issues that you will have to deal with to survive--plain and simple. City living isn't for everyone. I suggest you try to find a place that doesn't have the issues you wrote about. Good luck!

I love Baltimore in spite of its reputation because of the wonderful residential architecture and that old East Coast scale and streetscape (I'm a sucker for 19th Century rowhouses). It is smaller than Chicago, and some issues will be resolved because of this. But Baltimore is still going to have many of the same problems you complained about in Chicago. More of them, in some cases. Maybe you would be happier in a smaller city or town?

I think you would like the suburbs; move back to Montgomery where you liked it

Chicago is very similar to Baltimore City. It's very ethnic, has a decrepit rapid transit system, has a mayor for life who matches Dixon in perfidy, and has a crooked political system that will remain Democratic beyond the year 2150. If you've lived in Chicago, I'd say you are well prepared to move to Baltimore.

And the winters are warmer in Baltimore.

Rural life is not for everyone either. Watching corn grow only goes so far.
