I think that it is good that Maine does not have high taxes.

As for having a high 'tax burden', I don't know.

To simply look at how much tax money is spent as compared to the simple number of tax-payers; might be a valid ratio to look at. Once that has been re-indexed by the average household income, it looses it's value as a ratio.

There are urban areas in Maine with high income households, and there are rural areas in Maine with low income households. Is there any method of merging the two stats to form a valid way to compare? It becomes gibberish.



Maine clearly has low taxes, which the rural population can take advantage of and enjoy.

Maine cities also spend a ton of money on urban services within it's urban areas, which drives up the numbers when it is all summed statewide.

Is that a good thing?

Maybe, maybe not, but those expenditures are usually the result of local decisionmaking - not statewide or federal policy, though the latter 2 certainly can play a role.
