A statement from Richard L. Connor

"You are reading the first edition of your Portland Press Herald published by a new owner and my new company, MaineToday Media Inc."

"The Maine newspapers – the Portland Press Herald, the Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville – all share deep traditions of providing quality newspapers to their audiences. Collectively, they also are the dominant online news source in the state."

"Our job is to tell you about where you live. Everything. Good and bad. We do, however, come to this task with a premise. You live in your communities because you love them and you love your state. We will celebrate those things we all love about our towns and our state.

I have owned property in this state my entire life. It is an honor now to own Maine newspapers and to have the chance to serve "

I have high hopes for this new company. A move toward responsible journalism that allows some page space for the other side will be welcome and increase advertising revenue. If Mr. Connor embraces this he will do well.

Maine papers have a useful purpose starting Maine woodstoves. Other than that not so much!
Responsible journalism is an oxymoron.

As a long time journalist, it may surprise you to learn that I am very skeptical when it comes to any media source. The bigger they are, the more slanted their work seems to be. But, in fairness, please try to remember a few things. For one, they can never get the whole truth, partly because some parties involved can't or won't cooperate. Second, they are liable for liable reporting accurately on both sides, as far as they can get reliable info. When it doesn't jive with the gossip we've heard, it doesn't make them wrong. And more than anything else, the media isn't supposed to take sides or have an opinion. There's an old saying in the media--"It's our job to inform the public, not form public opinion." Journalists, responsible ones, don't get an opinion. You have to do your best to be fair to everybody and personal opinions cannot enter into what you report. You want to find yourself in the middle of a controversy? Be the journalist covering it. Everybody wants you on their side, even though they know you just can't do that and remain impartial.
And let me point out one thing that most people probably never think about. Most of the time, a journalist who is reporting on a story is right in the middle of what's going on, seeing and hearing for themselves and talking to the people involved. They are not relying on third or fourth or sixth hand information from somebody who heard about it from somebody else. Before you judge, consider how close to the actual events YOUR information is.
