and that is what I was afraid of........
I know Suzuki had a weak bat and sometimes questionable defence, but he handled the young staff well...
The A's pitching staff is young and lacks an established performance record. I do not think that one can link their ups and downs to a singular factor such as the Suzuki trade.
To wit:
A's 2011 team ERA by months:
April 2.79
May 3.17
June 3.38
July 4.35
August 4.93
September 3.68
All that variation took place with Suzuki doing the catching all year.
In 2012 it has been:
April 3.57
May 3.91
June 3.32
July 3.14
August 4.28
The high/low difference in 2011 was 2.14. In 2012 it has been 1.14.
So, if a greater difference can occur when Suzuki was there all year, we do not have evidence that this year's variation has anything to do with him one way or the other.
He isn't even that great. .500 pitcher and over the hill, and all he did was continually throw fastballs.
That gets old REALLY quickly. I don't think his suspension will be that bad for the A's.
True, he was a stopper in the A's rotation (we now know why), but with Anderson and McCarthy returning, it frees up a badly needed spot in the rotation.
This team has remained fiercly competetive and scrappy-----they play hard, and after some rough patches, they always bounce back.
They seem to get contributions from everyone------it is a nice story to see Carter doing well.
Hopefully Drew can provide some spark down the stretch, and Anderson coming back can ease Colons loss.
In this era of high priced free agency and money being tossed all over the place, it is still nice to see a story like the Oakland Atheltics happen------maybe if things play out well, there be a sequel in store for Moneyball.
They keep proving me wrong (even if it was the lowly Indians this week). Getting Drew from Arizona has helped fill the SS position, and Donaldson has been a shocker with his hitting from the 3B. Things are looking good for them getting the WC, but Baltimore is not fading and Detroit has a cake schedule in September, so we'll see what happens.
I think the A's will finish ahead of Baltimore, but not so confident they'll hold off Detroit.
