Are the Angels heading to another terrible April/May? They have lost their first two games versus the Mariners in Anaheim. The Angels have had terrible starts to the season the last couple of seasons. The bad starts have buried them for the rest of the season. With a division including Oakland and Texas the Angels can't afford to dig themselves in a rut they can't get out of. It's too early to panic of course but the bad starts are always in the back of your mind if you're an Angel fan and especially for the front office.
Nonsense, it is never too early to panic. If it eventually becomes apparent that this is another lost season for the Angels, think of all the time you will have wasted being calm when you could have gotten a jump start on anxiety and hysteria.
Make that 3 straight losses for the Angels. I never understood the hype behind this team anyway. It wasn't a sound ballclub. Regardless, the Mariners must be feeling good about themselves, especially with the production they're getting out of Smoak and Ackley.
To add insult to injury for the Angels, there's really no excuse for starting slow this season after the way they took the Cactus League as seriously as they did in an attempt to try to avoid just this. The real explanation here might be that it's not a sound team and has a poor pitching staff still.
As I sat in my A's seats during the Opener on Monday night, I pondered the infamous RF Bleacher section and what type of intricate theme they might perform for new closer, Jim Johnson. Sean Doolittle, who pitched the 8th inning, is introduced to head-banging fans and a Metallica song, much like Balfour Rage from the previous two seasons.
Johnson then went on to get just 1 out as he gave up 2 hits, a walk, and the only runs that Oakland would give up while collecting the loss.
He left the field to boos reigning down from the sold-out Coliseum crowd.
Fast forward to tonight where Jim Johnson comes on for the save. His line: 0.2 IP, 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs en route to his second loss.
He again heard it from the boo birds.

Through 3 days of the season, Gio Gonzalez, the Nationals starting pitcher has as many home runs as Mike Trout, Chris Davis, Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, Prince Fielder & Paul Goldschmidt have combined. Trout had a homer on opening day for the home run among that group, and Gio took one out to left-center field this evening off Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon.
Reds Pitcher Tony Cingrani extended his record last night to 19 consecutive starts without giving up more than five hits in the game. Cingrani has never allowed more than 5 hits in any start in his career. No pitcher has ever complied such a streak at the beginning, or for that matter at any point during his career.
Granted, he pitches in an era in which pitchers are not expected to pitch complete games despite getting lit up, but still, even the greatest modern day pitches have never accomplished that.
Cardinals had Infield Fly Rule invoked on two consecutive batters. I wonder how often that has ever happened before, normally you would go a week without seeing the IFR called. In any case, two would be a record that can never be broken, as there could not be a third one.
The Giants @ Diamondbacks game today suffered a three and a half minute delay in the first inning due to the appearance on the field of a swarm of bees. This must happen often there in Arizona because they had a beekeeper in all the protective gear right there on the spot to go out and chase them away. It was handled with great efficiency.
