We are under way on the US continent, Dodgers and Padres going at it in San Diego.

Clayton Kershaw will not be pitching in this series, nor in any series for a time. He has opened his seven year, 215 million dollar contract by going on the DL for the first time in his career.
Quote:
Kershaw was gradually increasing the distance and velocity of his throws on Saturday when he felt a twinge on toss No. 27, Mattingly said.

"I think that once Clayton felt something, he knew that he wasn't going to make his start on Friday,'' Mattingly said. "With his throwing progression, the fact that he stopped right away is all we've asked of him from the beginning: 'If you feel it at all, you've got to stop.' And he stopped right away.''
Clayton Kershaw of Los Angeles Dodgers put on DL with back discomfort - ESPN Los Angeles

Breaks my heart, Kershaw won't be pitching against the Giants next weekend.

As an A's fan, I'm disappointed to see Parker and Griffin not be able to start the season (and Parker, not at all), but at least it gives us a chance to see Straily and Milone in the rotation with someone like Drew Pomeranz or Arnold Leon being the first one to get a shot in spot-start situations. As always, the A's are going to have a starter surprise the league and my guess is that guy is going to be Jesse Chavez or the aforementioned Leon. I'm absolutely excited to see Chavez in the rotation this season.

Although the A's may lack that #1 ace-type pitcher everyone froths at the mouth over, they go about 8 or 9 deep on starters. Not a bad problem to have.

Not only is the Dodger's 215 million dollar ace on the shelf, but their ten million dollar a year set up man, weirdo Brian Wilson, blew the game in the 8th last night by giving up three runs while getting no one out.

Does anyone know why the Rangers' opening day starter is Tanner Scheppers who has two seasons of experience as a relief pitcher but had never made a start in his career?

At any rate it did not work out well for Texas. Scheppers got hammered for seven runs in four innings...eight hits and three walks. That was only slightly worse than All Star Cliff Lee did for the Phillies. The Rangers got to him for eight runs on eleven hits and a walk in five innings.

Curtis Granderson opened his Met career by going 0 for 5 with three strikeouts in NY's 10 inning loss to the Nationals.

Mets had won 20 of their last 22 season openers and I believe still have the best record on opening day. I know it was just the Mets so I shouldn't be that excited, but that was a great win for the Nats and the first of many wins for Matt Williams. Strasburg didn't have his best stuff out there, and after failing him countless times last year, the offense finally put up some runs in a start. Obviously helped out a bit when the 2 Mets relievers couldn't throw a single strike in 8 pitches which tied the game, but after Legares home run in the 8th, Span with the 2 out single in the 9th which forced extra innings.

Darvish had a stiff neck and had to be pushed back and Derek Holland, Colby Lewis & Matt Harrison are all injured. They didn't have much of a choice, because I wondered the same thing.

The A's were about 2 inches away from Josh Donaldson putting a 3-run bomb past the wall in the deepest part of the ballpark last night in the 9th inning, which would have given them a 3-0 lead. Instead, it hits off the very top of the wall with Daric Barton sticking around too close to 2nd base and only advancing to third rather than scoring. Team that with Donaldson slipping on a Jed Lowrie base hit earlier in the game and being unable to score, and you've got the A's handing the Indians a shutout.

Luke Gregerson's A's debut couldn't have been any more impressive; he retired all 3 batters he faced on 9 pitches, striking out two.

Jim Johnson's A's debut, on the other hand, couldn't have gone much worse; he retired just one batter, giving up 2 hits, a walk, and 2 runs and collected the loss.

The A's have now lost a major-league record 10 consecutive opening day games.

I noticed that on that play, Donaldson and Barton reached opposite conclusions...and both were proved wrong. Donaldson thought that it was gone, and went into his home run trot as he left the plate. Barton thought that it was going to be caught, which is why he drifted back to second to tag instead of going half way so that he could score if it wasn't caught.

In the first plate appearance of his final season, Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch.

He has gone on to strike out and ground out so far. Yanks trail mighty Astros 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth in Houston.
