Angels 3 @ A's 7.

Following 1 out walks to Albert Pujols and Jason Castro and a flyout from Andrelton Simmons, Brian Goodwin singled home the first run of the game, but Ramon Laureano would tie the game with a home run in the bottom half to knot the score at 1. Simmons reached on a Matt Chapman error to start the 7th, went to 3rd on a Goodwin flyout, and scored on a David Fletcher sac fly. Marcus Semien had a 1 out walk in the 8th, and Laurenao and Chapman each followed with extra base hits to give the A's a 3-2 lead, but Chapman would get thrown out at home attempting to score on a wild pitch, and Castro would tie the game with a 9th inning home run off of Liam Hendriks. Which forced us to extra innings, the first game in MLB history a game went to 10 innings which started with a runner on second base. That runner for the Angels was Shohei Otani would got erased on a fielders choice, but the Angels would load the bases with a single and walk, but Burch Smith got Simmons to ground out to end the inning. Semien started the A's half inning on second base, Laureano got hit by a pitch, both advanced on a wild pitch, Khris Davis walked, and Matt Olson ended the game with a walk off grand slam, the first opening day walk off grand slam since 1986. Andrew Heaney allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 homer) with 0 walks and 6 strikeouts in 4.2, Jacob Barnes (1st hold) had 2 strikeouts and 1 hit allowed in a scoreless inning, Ty Buttrey (1st blown save) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 0 strikeouts in 2/3, and Hansel Robles (0-1) allowed 3 runs (though only 2 earned runs as the runners placed on base [Semien in this case] counts as an unearned run) with 1 hit, 1 walk (1 hBP) and 2 strikeouts in 1.1, and while Hoby Miller didn't factor in the decision he threw 1 pitch which was deposited by Olson into the right field stands for the walkoff grand slam. Frankie Montas allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 3 walks (1 HBP) and 5 strikeouts in 4 innings, Hendriks (1st blown save) allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 1 inning, and Smith (1-0), according to A's Cast was apart of the first Giants/A's trade involving major league players in 30 years gets the win with 1 walk and 1 hit in a scoreless inning.

Game 2 of the series is on Saturday afternoon. Sean Manaea (4-0, 1.21 in a shorten 2019) starts for the A's while newcomer Dylan Bundy (7-14, 4.79 last year with the Orioles) takes the ball for the Halos. Game time slated for 4:10.

The first use of the runner on second to start extra inning games, turned out to be of no consequence. The Angels failed to score in the top of the 10th, the A's would have won with or without the runner on second at the start of the inning.

The A's are also using cardboard cutouts of fans and they got their money's worth with a humdinger of an opener. However, these fans, although smiling a lot, seemed rather inanimate for the entire game. Even the walk off grand slam failed to bring them to their feet.

Default 1-1

Angels 4 @ A's 1.

Justin Upton had a 2 out home run in the 4th to put the Angels on the board. Andrellton Simmons and David Fletcher each had back-to-back 2 out doubles to put the Halos up 4-0 in the 5th, while the A's got a 2 out double from Stephen Piscotty and a RBI single from Robbie Grossman for their lone run in the 7th. They got the tying run to the plate in the 8th but Matt Chapman hit into a double play. Sean Manaea (0-1) allowed 4 runs and 5 hits (1 home run) with 0 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4.2. Dylan Bundy (1-0) allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 0 walks and 7 strikeouts over 6.2 in his Angels debut, Ty Buttrey (1st hold) allowed 2 hits in 1 inning, and Hansel Robles (1st save) had a 1-2-3 9th with 1 strikeout.

Game 3 of the wraparound 4 game series on Sunday. Shohei Otani (4-2, 3.31 in 18) will head to the pitchers mound for the first time in almost 2 years for the Angels while the A's hand the ball Mike Fiers (15-4, 3.90 last year) with Fiers first pitch scheduled for 4:10, 1:10 for Grandstander out in the Bay Area.

Default 2-1

Angels 4 @ A's 6.

Marcus Semien started the 1st with a walk and than Shohei Ohtani would issue 3 straight walks to Ramon Laureano, Matt Chapman, and Matt Olson for a 1-0 lead. Mark Canha and Robbie Grossman would add back to back singles for a 4-0 lead and Canha would score the 5th run on a double play ball by Vimael Machin. Brian Goodwin and David Fletcher would single to start the 3rd and Mike Trout followed with his first home run of the season to cut the lead to 5-3, and Trout would cut the lead to 5-4 in the 5th with a sac fly, but Sean Murphy would add the final run of the game, an insurance tally with a solo home run in the 6th. Ohtani (0-1) didn't record an out in his first start on the mound as he faced 6 batters; 3 reached on hits, 3 reached via a walk, and 5 of the 6 ended up scoring. So, on the bright side even if he allows 3 runs his next start at least if he records 1 out it will automatically be better. Mike Fiers allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (1 homer) through 4 innings, Yusmeiro Petit (1-0) had 1 strike out in a hitless inning, T.J. McFarland (1st hold), Joakim Soria (1st hold), and Jake Diekman (1st hold) had 2 strikeouts and 2 hits allowed in 2.2, while Liam Hendriks (1st save) had 1 strikeout in a hitless 1.1 picking up his 1st save of the year.

The wraparound, 4 game series concludes on Monday afternoon. Chris Bassitt (10-5, 3.81 last year) starts for the A's, while the Angels will give the ball to Griffin Canning (5-6, 4.58); first pitch scheduled for 3:40.

Six A's pitchers spent the game pitching out of the stretch, they gave up 9 hits and 3 walks to the Angels, but stranded them all in a 3-0 win. The Angels struck out 12 times, three of them by Mike Trout, who got hot under the collar when called out on a high pitch to end the game. In the four game series the A's managed to contain Trout to a .214/.333/.429 slash.

The A's are now 3-1, which I think clinches one of the post season spots for them.

Default 3-1

Angels 0 @ A's 3.

Tony Kemp had a 1 out single in the 3rd, went to 3rd on a single by Marcus Semien, and scored on a sac fly by Ramon Laueano, who would score on a double by Matt Chapman, while Mark Canha homered leading off the 4th for the games final run. Chris Bassitt allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts over 4 scoreless innings, Burch Smith (2-0) had 1 hit and 1 strikeout in 2 innings, T.J. McFarland (2nd hold), Yusmiero Petit (1st hold), and Jake Diekman (2nd hold) had a combined 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hit in 2 scoreless innings, and Joakim Soria (1st save) had 2 strikeouts and 2 hits in a scoreless inning.

A's stay in Oakland for a 2 game series against the Rockies which begins on Tuesday. Daniel Mengden (5-2, 4.83 last year) starts for the A's opposed by Anthonio Senzatela (11-11, 6.71 last year) the scheduled starter for the Rockies with game time slated for 9:40. Angels head home for the home opener at the Big A against the Mariners beginning on Tuesday night.

Default 3-2

Rockies 8 @ A's 3.

Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon had back to back 1 out singles in the 3rd to put runners at the corners, and Nolan Aranado drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly. Ramon Laureano had a 1 out single, and back to back walks loaded the bases, but Mark Canha had a sac fly and Khris Davis struck out so the A's could only muster the 1 run. Sam Hilliard had a 2 run homer in the 4th to put the Roxs in front for good and Daniel Murphy added an RBI single in the 5th and than Raimel Tapia added a sac fly in the inning for a 5-1 lead. Laureano and Matt Olson would sandwich singles around a Matt Chapman pop up, and Canha had his second RBI on a force out to make it 5-2, but the Roxs would avert further damage getting Davis to hit into an inning ending double play. Tony Wolters had an RBI double, David Dahl had a 2 RBI double, and Olson scored on a Robbie Grossman ground out in the 8th to complete the scoring. Daniel Mengden (0-1) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 4 innings. Antonio Senzatela (1-0) allowed 2 runs scattering 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings, Tyler Kinley (1st hold), and Daniel Bard (1st hold) allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts in 3 innings. In other divisional action, the Rangers lost to the D'backs 1-4, the Astros lost to the Dodgers 2-5, and the Angels beat the Mariners 10-2. Houston and the A's remain tied at the top at 3-2, Angels 1 back at 2-3, Rangers are 1.5 back at 1-3 and the Mariners sit 2 back with a 1-4 record.

The finale of the 2 game series is on Wednesday. German Marquez (0-1, 1.59) starts for the Rockies opposed by Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.25) who takes the ball for the A's; first pitch slated for 3:40.

Default 3-3

Rockies 5 @ A’s 1.

Well, Grandstander, not sure about you, but if you had told me five minutes before first pitch on Friday night that the A’s would finish 3-3 on their first homestand I would’ve gone “Ok, I would take that. They usually start the year slow anyways, Angels look to be an improving club on the upswing, Roxs seem to start the year hot before doing the opposite as the A’s and imploding the second half of the year. I’d take a split against the Angels and a split with the Roxs or lose 3 of 4 to the Angels and sweep the Roxs.” However, after opening with 3 of 4 against the Angels getting to the 3-3 split isn’t as rosy for me as it would’ve been had they lost one of those other 2 games to the Angels and beaten the Roxs one of these 2 games. But credit the Roxs. They shut down Texas over the weekend and they shut down the A’s this week. Their pitching wasn’t going to hold up for 162 but maybe it’s got a chance to only up for 60, if they even get to 60?? Matt Chapman had a 2 out homer in the first for the A’s only run of the game, while the Roxs tied it at 1 on a bases loaded single by Tony Wolters, but Frankie Montas would escape further damage, getting David Dahl to pop up and Trevor Story to ground out. 2 straight singles to open the 4th for Colorado put runners on the corners and Garrett Hampson gave them the lead for good with a sac fly. A Story single and a Charlie Blackman RBI double gave the Roxs a 3-1 lead in the 8th, and the final 2 Rockies runs would score on a 9th inning error. German Marquez (1-1) allowed 1 run on 4 hits (1 home run) with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts, Carlos Estevez (2nd hold) and Jairo Gonzalez (2nd hold) had 3 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 hit in 2 combined innings. Montas (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings. Rangers beat the D’Backs 7-4, the Astros lose to the Dodgers 2-4, and the Mariners beat the Angels 10-7 in other divisional action. Astros and A’s remain tied at the top at 3-3, Rangers at 2-3 are a half game off the pace, and the Angels and Mariners are both 2-4 and 1 back.

Both teams have Thursday off before resuming on Friday; The Rockies head to Denver for the home opener to welcome in the Padres beginning on Friday, while the A’s head up to Seattle for a 4 game wraparound series that begins Friday night. Taijuan Walker (0-1, 13.50) starts for the Mariners against Sean Manaea (0-1, 7.71) for the A’s with first pitch scheduled for about 9:40.

Yeah, Beane tends to build on the fly, tinkering with the club until around the 70 game mark, and that's when they start to get hot. Of course this year, at game 70, the season will have ended 10 games earlier. Hard to work that second half magic when there is no second half.

The A's have won four straight, tonight over Texas with their second walk off grand slam of the year.

Edinson Volquez began the 9th for the Rangers and it was four pitch walk, single, walk, popout and Jesse Chavez was summoned. Stephen Piscotty parked the first pitch thrown by Chavez over the centerfield fence. 5-1 A's.

This moves the A's into first place in the AL West, a half game ahead of Houston.
