Uh oh...there are some Philadelphia Phillie fans who had already decided that Halliday was taking their team to the Series. If I may quote Homer Simpson, "D'oh!"

I think you're confusing Roy Halladay (the Blue Jays pitcher) with Matt Holliday (the guy who just got traded to the Cardinals).

This will be a good deal for the Cards and will be good for the stretch run. If they do get in the playoffs, he will pay off big.

And if they don't get in the playoffs, they are screwed because they p*ssed away a good prospect to get Holliday. Horrible management sometimes. But I understand where they are coming from - the NL Central is very tight this year.

Brett Wallace was a good prospect, but many people doubted that he would ever pan out at 3B. So, where else would he play in the field? 1B is the likely next step, and if you recall, that position will probably be occupied into the foreseeable future in St. Louis.

Management has also expressed time and time again that they'd expand payroll for the right player, so even if we miss the playoffs, Holliday's departure isn't certain. I fully understand what it means to be dealing with a Scott Boras client, but the Cardinals have dealt with him successfully before (see Kyle Lohse's most recent contract). I guess we'll have to see.

With the exception of Frank Thomas in his first stint with the A's, Oakland has had horrible luck with higher priced players that they have brought in for temporary duty. Johnny Damon had his worst season as an A, Jermaine Dye was on the dl as often as he was out in the field and he underperformed when he was able to play, Mike Sweeney more or less mirrored Dye's experience. Mike Piazza had no last hurrah in him, Jason Kendall stopped hitting the year the A's signed him, and this year Holiday's bat went on vacation while Giambi and Garciaparra have been so bad that you don't mind that they are too hurt to play most of the time.

Kendall, Dye, Damon, and this year Holiday, commanded the top spots among A's salaries while they were in Oakland. The other highest paid regular over the last five seasons has been Eric Chavez who has been worse and played less for four consecutive seasons.

For Beane's acclaimed genius for effective use of a small payroll, that was an awful lot of money tossed away on very little return.

I disagree. The A's in this decade have had 7 seasons over 500 and have made the play offs 5 times. All of this with one of the smallest payrolls in the league. If beane had the money that the cubs, dodgers, or red sox had to work with, the A's would probably have acquired several rings this decade as well. Billy Beane is a smart cookie, hes no god, but he is a smart cookie.
