That's because Iverson
couldn't play effectively within the team concept with another star caliber player (or more accurately star caliber offensive player) on the team. Remember the oil and water-like play of Iverson and Jerry Stackhouse together or Iverson and Larry Hughes together? To be fair, those guys were sort of ball hogs themselves, but they were ineffective playing with Iverson because Iverson had the ball all the time.
Iverson
needed to play with players who didn't need the ball too much to be effective within the team concept (or more accurately for his team to successfully integrate Allen Iverson's skill set into the team and enhance the team's play), i.e. defensive-oriented, rebounding-oriented, and/or passing-oriented players. When Iverson played with offensive-oriented players, especially offensive-oriented players at the 2 and 3 spots, the combination of Iverson and that other player ended up being less than the sum of their parts.
