I totally get that. And I agree with you. But damn, with the money these players make, you would think that they could look to improve things that they can work on like handle/ ball control/ passing ability. Why should you be in the league if all you can do is shoot when you are wide open?
So what specific players do you have in mind? It seems like most people who make the criticism you do always have one particular player in mind....
Dwight Howard.
And Dwight is such a unique case. Big men who are strong and athletic with little basketball skill play just as great a role as guards who are skilled with little athleticism. If your knock on the game is that big men are not as skilled as they used to be,* then I can agree with that. But if your gripe is that skill across all positions has somehow declined, then I cannot agree.
*Even the "there are no skilled big men" thing gets blown a bit out of proportion, imo. Guys like Lamarcus Aldridge, the Gasol Brothers, Andrew Bogut, Kevin Love, etc. have skills. No, they aren't Ewing or Olajuwon, but most guards aren't Jordan or Drexler either. The game has changed, so you see more bigs facing the basket nowadays, but that doesn't mean they don't have skills.
Hopefully he gets himself turned around financially.
Glad to say we share our hometown.
Thank god for NBA pensions which are untouchable and put into place for exactly this reason.
Iverson will be fine, he might not be living in a mansion on the ocean but he's not going to be living in a box under the freeway.
His financial issues are therefore the LEAST of his worries IMO. He needs to get sober and find a positive source to direct his energies or he won't be around into his later years.
He is still a pretty popular figure in the history of the NBA and if he gets his life etc. straightened out there are lots of things he can do.
Considering (famous) NBA players have second careers after retiring, I'm sure the 50k will be fine.
Like someone previously said, he needs to manage his life the right way or it doesn't matter what he receives.
Don't think Iverson is a "coach type" but maybe a scout? TV analyst? Or just doing commercials/endorsements? Or is too much of a straight-shooter/street talk to be an analyst?

Iverson could make bank doing stuff overseas (China) as well as in the US even if it's just card shows, and-1 type events etc. Especially when he becomes a HOFer in a couple years.
His out-sized personality makes him fairly famous and he is a global underdog for the "little guy".
He could replace Shaq on TNT - I would be OK with that. However, something like that doesn't seem to fit him.
I could see him as some counselor - maybe one of the ex-players to help rookies coming into the league on what NOT to do, and what to watch out for.
Agreed.
They need to get Shaq out of there because he's just being an a$$ to Barkley etc. and I want to hear insights, not Shaq asking Barkley how many rings he doesn't have.
(I like Shaq, but when he starts "measuring" he comes across as petty and insecure.)
