Hi my family is planning to move to Baton Rouge from the Washington, DC area. Need lots of advice on where to live - safe and accessible to amenities, and schools - middle and high school with vigorous curriculum and talented staff. Finding great schools will determine where we live. We are interested in all types of school -public, private, chartered and magnet schools. Just tell me of good ones. Please help...we are set to move this summer.

The Dufroq School and Baton Rouge Magnet High are both two magnet schools along Government Street. Dufroc literally JUST became a Magnet School so I'm not sure how much progress they've made. I expect it to take several years of good reports for the school to become more diverse. Previously it was an underachieving, primarily black school directly across the street from the child friendly, primarily white Garden District. I expect that once Dufroq proves itself, it will be a VERY popular choice for Garden District parents.

Baton Rouge Magnet has been around for years now and the main campus (dating from 1929, I believe) is about to undergo a massive renovation. During the overhaul, classes will be held at the recently closed Lee High School on Lee Drive. It has a very good reputation and students come from all over the spectrum.
