I'm just guessing between 25% and 35%. It's one of the larger groups of folks in Hilo. They'd be nisei or sansei and beyond by now, though.

I read somewhere that it's 15 percent. According to city data for Hilo, it's 35 percent for all Asians. Here's the racial breakdown...

[LEFT]
  • Asian alone - 16,841 (35.0%)
  • White alone - 11,088 (23.1%)
  • Two or more races - 10,496 (21.8%)
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 5,022 (10.4%)
  • Hispanic - 4,485 (9.3%)
  • Black alone - 127 (0.3%)
  • American alone - 45 (0.09%)

Hilo is not actually a city. It is not incorporated as a city, although it is the designated county capitol.

US Census figures for Hilo CDP (Census-Designated Place) 40,759 during the 2000 census (and 47,345 according to a 2007 estimate) The racial makeup of the CDP in 2000 was 17.12% White, 0.45% African American, 0.34% Native American, 38.30% Asian, 13.12% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 29.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.78% of the population.
