one of the bicycle forums i go and vist a lot there is a guy who lives on the big island he basically use a bicycle only as he main transport on the big island..he lives in the eastern side of the island toward north Kohala and goes into town with a trailer to get the basic items as it need ..

he works from home and gardens for main food ..but could you survive with just a bike and trailer for getting into town ..

so can you do that without a car or can you rent a car as it need to get the large box stores as need ..

It could be done and is done here on the Big Island. I live about 8 miles from the local store and its uphill not bad going to but coming from coast most all the way. but if you live up slope then it could be a hard ride. So I would do research to where to live it biking is a priority.

The county bus circles the island and it is free for passengers. I think it costs $1 to carry your bicycle on the carrier on the front of the bus. So, sure, you can get a lot of places with a bicycle.

It could totally be done, just depends on the type of person and their needs/lifestyle. I don't think just anyone could do it though. I wouldn't want to, but i love to go as many places and see as much as possible (and sleep in my car haha). i think it's admirable though, i really do and i commened the people who do it and are dedicated to it. i think the difference is that some people need china and dustbuster and others do not, if that makes any sense.
