My sister and i were battering around the idea of possibly moving to Puna.
My sister is an AMAZING hair artist (cosmetology). So if there is anyone out there who can possibly give us some information about Salons in and or near Puna that we can look into that would be great. Maybe find out some prices for us on "C.O.L" (cost of living). And also what people charge in salons out there for an experienced stylist.

You need to visit, Puna is quite rural.

I'll add that it's a very large area... the island of Oahu would fit in Puna district... and historically it's been an agricultural area forevah, and is not densely populated.

And purely opinion now... I'm not sure there's much hair cutting or styling going on in Puna. Doesn't seem to be something Puna folks have much interest in.

OP, I was waiting for some of our Punatics to post here, but maybe they are busy with earthquakes/tsunamis. Anyway, there is a specific forum called PunaWeb that you should check out.

Dreadlocks seem a popular style in Puna. Perhaps the Kona side would be more cosmetology conscious? More expensive to live there, though.

As far as cost of living, it depends on your living. Some Puna folks live in shacks in the jungle with no power or water except that caught as rainfall on their roofs. They eat a lot of vegetarian food which they grow themselves and their cost of living is negligible. There are other Puna folks who live in mainland style houses with pools and air conditioning, drive new cars, buy new stuff and eat mainland food and their cost of living is astronomical.

You might want to talk with Craig at Elements Hair Design about the realities of having a salon in Puna. He is in Mountain View. (Yes, he cut my hair a few times...I went to him on and off until I moved to Waimea.)
