My girlfriend and I want to move to Hilo for school at U of H for marine science. I am just a little concerned about the job market. We have both been bar-tending for over 9 years each but are capable of doing any job in a restaurant or bar. I lived on Maui eight years ago for four years and had no problems and really enjoyed it but I do realize that there is alot less tourism in Hilo. But how easy is it to get a 30 hr a week job in a decent restaurant or bar?? What about renting? what are things like there right now??
We are just hoping to get some "REAL" answers thanks

See the similar thread, already in process at: https://www.city-data.com/forum/hawai...-now-oahu.html

Executive summary: Jobs are tight. Very different than 8 years ago.

Spend some time reading through the previous posts here to get more detail. Read the "Relocation" Sticky thread at the top of the page completely.

One point... there are a lot more 20 hour a week jobs than 30 hr a week jobs, because over 20 hrs the employer has to provide a health insurance plan.

The job marke between Oahu and Hilo are worlds apart.

The job market is weak at best the only bright spot is the new target that will open this summer

I agree with Koakine.

Oahu is down to about 6.x% unemployment, which scews the numbers for the rest of the islands, which are in the neighborhood of 9%-12% unemployment.

Hilo may have a lot of restaurants - but most are the very small, family owned kine. If you aren't family - you no work there. There are a number of small tavern/bars, but it is most likely the same situation.
