Might be cheaper to have no car at all and just take a cab when The Bus doesn't work. I always had a motorcycle in Honolulu because there's generally a free place to park a motorcycle or moped. Moped theft is rampant, though. Motorcycles, too, but not quite as bad. There is loads of petty theft in Honolulu.
I'm a huge proponent of public transit (I am from NYC afterall) but I think I have to transfer 2-3x on the Bus to get to work at Tripler. THat won't fly since my work day starts at 730! I will look into garages in Makiki.
There may not be any official "garages" in Makiki. Most parking is handled by each condominium or property being required to have so many per property, but generally there are more cars than parking spaces. The closer you get to downtown, the more expensive parking gets and Makiki is pretty densely populated so parking is hard to find. Can you carpool with anyone at work? What do the other folks at Tripler do?
If you think you are going to have a problem with parking, wait until you see what the traffic around Makiki is like around 7 am on weekdays.
Much faster on a bicycle. After all, you are in Honolulu with its year round sunny days. If its raining, take the bus.
