There are folks giving away burros right now and those can be used for transportation. I saw someone riding one through town several weeks ago. I don't know if they ever gather the horses up or not since most of them are in Waipio valley and they don't get hit by cars there. The wild burros are out near the highway so they get gathered up occasionally so they don't cause a traffic hazard. Burros would probably eat less and be easier to keep than a horse, but I wouldn't know myself since I've not owned either one.

One of my friends is talking about starting a burro rescue. She has two and yes they tame down. Not sure why you would want to transport to mainland. As far as in the valley horses, the people have them taken care of for the most part. Have introduced some differnt genitic lines to help and are small very bouncy ponies. Appalosa is smooth compared. Why are you asking?

I'm asking because keeping a car is expensive.

Burros would eat less than horses, wouldn't they? And one would think the wild Waipio horses would be used to just living on pasture or forage or everyone's crops and what they can sneak out of coolers like they have been so one would think they would be less expensive to feed than horses which are used to grain and such. Still, I'm not a horse person, so this is just all guessing on my part.

Hey, Kansoku; if you want inexpensive transportation - ride the bus. It's not only air-conditioned, but it's free. It's hard to beat that price!

I didn't know the bus was free in the Big Island. What about the other islands of HI?
But perhaps if I live a self-sufficient life I might get a place where the nearest bus stop could be far?

I think the Hele-On bus on the Big Island is the only free bus in the islands. Since you haven't picked a place yet, make that one of the considerations when choosing a place. "Within walking distance to the bus stop". Actually, there aren't really that many official bus stops, you just kinda go up to the highway (in many places on the island there is only one road through that area which is just called "the highway" and nobody keeps track of road numbers or anything) anyway, you just go up to the highway and when the bus comes along it will stop and pick you up. It will let you off pretty much anywhere along the line, too.
