Hello! My husband and I are moving to Hilo in two weeks. He is a traveling nurse and we spend about 3 months living in different places all over the US. We are finishing up in Hollywood and were really looking for a slower change of pace, somewhere to relax. I loved it here in LA but just ready to be somewhere completely different.

We love the outdoors (we love hiking, running, biking, snorkeling) and I'm a beach bunny, I would be happy spending a day on the beach immersed in a good book.

We were assigned our housing at the Bayshore Towers. I can't really find any information, other than a pic and a little about the utilities. I was wondering if anyone on here knew anything about the place?

Also, I really want to try some of the local shops/restaurants, Any good suggestions?

Thanks!

Bayshore Tower is right on the ocean, just a short walk to downtown. I have never been inside but it looks like the views can be awesome. I do not yet live in Hilo. My husband and I are moving in 4.5 weeks on 6/22/2011. We have visited Hilo many times and just love it. I am also a RN but am not in the travel nurse business. My husband has taken a job so we hope to be in Hilo a good long time. I will be looking for a permanent position. Hilo has a very laid back vibe with lots of fun things to do. The farmers market, Palace theater and lots of good restaurants all within walking distance of where you will be living. Good luck!

Bayshore Towers are very nice. Not exactly the prettiest entry, but it's secure. The apartments are good, and have great views. You have a good place.

The beach in Hilo isn't particularly nice, it's sort of a dark gray muddy sand type beach. After the big tsunami, there was a huge break wall put in Hilo harbor so the water inside the break wall is anything but pristine. There are nicer places to swim further down the shore or the swimming pool in Hilo is free. There are a lot of nice parks, though, for sitting and reading in. The white sand beaches are over on the Kona side of the island.

Bayshore Towers is in a good location for walking to town. You'll be by the bayfront with all the interesting little boutique type shops, the downtown KTA (grocery store) as well as the large farmer's market. The Hilo library is near that end of town, too. Also a nice health food store, Abundant Life, is along bayfront and a nice little shop called "Basically Books" which has nice maps. There is another new small bookshop behind Koehn's Interiors on the first corner of Bayfront by your tower, too. If you need any plants or decorative outdoor stuff, Garden Exchange is a fun place.
